Buffaloes sharing Thol lake with Flamingos in Gujarat. A clear-cut case of human conflict in conservation. Why should human domestic buffalos be allowed to access wetlands that have been conserved for wild species of waterfowl? The buffaloes can fowl the water with their faeces making it unfit for the birds. They can also spread disease and would consume some of the nutrients that should be reserved for the flamingo population. The greater flamingo (Phoenicopterus roseus) is the most widespread species of the flamingo family. It is found in parts of Africa, southern Asia (Bangladesh and coastal regions of Pakistan and India), and southern Europe (including Spain, Albania, Turkey, Greece, Cyprus, Portugal, Italy and the Camargue region of France).
