This Girgit starts huffing and puffing with exhaustion after energetically stomping and patting down a mound with its chin and legs. The Common Oriental Garden Lizard or Calotes versicolor has laid its eggs in a small hole in the ground and wants to secure them from predators until they are ready to hatch. If we have interpreted this behaviour wrongly, please correct us and explain just what we are seeing here! Noteworthy are a pair of spines present on each side of the back of the head and behind the tympanum. 35-52 scales present around midbody. Supralabials: 9-11; Infralabials: 9-14. A rather large agamid with keeled scales all pointing backwards. Body brown,olive or greyish in colour. White dorsolateral streak on each side present. Dark streaks radiate from eyes.
