Is this urban Indian lizard trying to dig a pit to lay its eggs in? What exactly is this behaviour that we are witnessing here? The Girgit or Common Garden Lizard is a common urban reptile. It is sometimes mistaken as a 'bloodsucker' because male individuals display a red throat during mating season. This has been filmed in New Delhi at peak summer. A Girgit is filmed digging on the ground with its hands and mouth. Is it for the purpose of laying eggs to protect the eggs from predators or is it an adaptive behaviour to high temperature? Notice the Garden Lizard going at the ground with its mouth in full speed.
