Thick layers of toxic white foam floating across the surface of the Yamuna River, a recurring environmental crisis seen in heavily polluted stretches of the river near areas such as Kalindi Kunj and the Okhla Barrage. The foam is formed by high concentrations of phosphates, detergents, untreated sewage, industrial chemicals, and surfactants discharged into the river. Turbulence in the water causes these pollutants to accumulate into dense frothy layers that resemble snow or ice but are highly toxic and environmentally dangerous. Such severe pollution drastically reduces oxygen levels in the river, threatening aquatic ecosystems and posing health risks including respiratory problems and skin irritation for nearby residents and visitors.
