Discarded plastic, food wrappers and polystyrene cups are threatening the life of rivers. The potential impacts this could have for wildlife are far reaching: not only are the species that live in and around the river affected, but also those in seas that rivers feed into. Hats off to the wonderful ladies who actually cleaned the area of litter after a picnic in Arunachal Pradesh, in north-east India, along a tributary of the Brahmaputra river. Arunachal has a massive picnic culture and while a lot of the cooking takes place in hollow bamboo, modern culture is slowly creeping in and non-biodegradable materials such a thermocol are being used in large numbers. At least the womens' self-help groups are clearing these out of the rivers and streasm. This footage is part of the broadcast stock
