Ever noticed a big swarm of millipedes in gardens? These are arthropods with multiple jointed legs. The legs may vary from one individual to the other, Some might have 40 pairs of legs while the others might have more than hundreds. This has been filmed at our Wilderness Orchard in peak monsoon. This swarming is the survival behaviour of millipedes to keep predators at bay and also feeding. They move by crawling on top of each other in unison unidirectionally. This also helps them to fend off small predators like antys. They disband and take different routes when confronted by bigger predators.
