Every Year Thrissur celebrates the festival of elephants. The event is known as Pooram Gajamela which translates to “Festival of Elephants.” The elephant processions gather the largest crowds with music, percussion, and classical dance performances to the beat of Panch Vadyam. The people of Kerala worship elephants because in Hindu mythology elephants are considered pure and secondly, almost in every temple elephants are considered as the symbol of God's power. An elephant eats 250 kg of fodder every day. Elephants are the center attraction during the festivals here and during annual elephant march organized by Department of Tourism, tourists feel excitement because of elephants only.
