Fish, crocodile die as Bhima runs dry in Karnataka

Thousands of fish have been found dead at different places around the Bhima banks in Yadgir district in recent days. The reason: little water in the river. Residents of Shivanur, Joladadagi, Kandalli, Kumnur, Benakanahalli and other villages in Shahpur taluk have reported about crocodiles straying into their fields. Some were found dead later. It was not known whether they were killed or they died naturally. A smell, which was noticed last week, pervades for over several kilometres around the spot but officials are yet to clear the area. “Bhima river is the only source of drinking water for several villages and it has almost dried up. Now, after the death of fish and crocodiles, residents are scared to use the water,” said Linanna Jadi, a social worker. “We are forced to bear the smell as
