A caterpillar of the Indian Lily Moth (Polytela gloriosae) crawls slowly across the ground and over blades of grass. Its velvety black body is covered in bright white spots and orange patches, with an orange head and tail. The caterpillars are known as pests of lilies, and they feed on the leaves, flowers and buds of lilies and other bulb plants such as amaryllis and gladiolus. Their bold colours also warn predators. The adult moth is a golden-brown, medium-sized species, and the larvae are often seen in gardens during the rains. This clip offers a close look at the caterpillar’s pattern and its slow, rippling movement.
