Gulal is often the culprit when people start to hate Holi. While in the olden days, holi colours were made from the Flame-of-the-Forest or dhak / palash / tesu tree's flowers (which flower in March-April), nowadays people have taken away the innocence of Holi by using coloured powder that contains chemicals including lead, chromium, potassium, zinc and other poisons for the human body. The more vile folks even add powdered glass and literally poisons. Gulal itself can vary from harmless to very harmless, so let's all learn to bring the innocence back to our festivities, and play organically! Holi is a religious spring festival celebrated by Hindus, as a festival of colours.
