INFS spokesperson says "This academy was earlier was known as Indian Forest College and was established way back in the year 1938 in this campus. Before 1938, training of Forest officers was conducted in several countries of Europe, including Oxford, Nantes in France and also in Germany. So in 1938, this college was established and in 1987 it was elevated to the status of National Forest Academy and was named as Indira Gandhi National Forest Academy." It is situated in the New Forest campus of Forest Research Institute (FRI) on Chakrata Road (NH-72), five kilometres from Dehradun town. IGNFA is currently functioning as a Staff College for the officers of the Indian Forest Service (IFS).
