By the end of 1990, BJP and electoral ally of V.P. Singh decided to launch a nationwide rath yatra. A chariot pilgrimage in support of building a temple in disputed Babri Masjid site at Ayodhya. The BJP withdrew its support of the V.P. Singh government when L.K. Advani was arrested and the rath yatra halted. The political uncertainty that followed camouflaged a grim reality. The economists explained that over the past 40 years a series of debatable economic decisions had led the country to the brink of a financial collapse.
