This practice of racing bullocks has now been put a stop to, in India, thankfully. Pune Festival, 1995 which is also celebrated along with the Ganesh Chaturthi in Maharashtra and other western Indian states brings a host of thrilling and exciting art and handicrafts and a celebration of culture and tradition but nothing beats the Bullock Car racing during this festival. Oxen decorated and drawing bullocks and made to run a race is a celebration in this part of India as a celebration of culture and tradition and religion. Watch this archival footage of men wearing mostly white clothing on both sides of the track and cheering and bellowing for their favourite race as the driver and the animals run.
