Radical. Shocking. Even disturbing. What may seem like blind superstition to some is faith and strong belief for many, here in India. Karva Chauth, a tough day of fasting without food or even water from before sunrise till after the moon comes up at night. Married women keep this fast for the long life and well being of their husbands. During this festival, known as Bagwal, two groups from neighbouring villages in Uttarakhand throw stones at each other while trying to protect themselves with large wooden shields. Blood flows from the injuries caused due to the stone-pelting. The priest stops the ritual, as soon as blood equivalent to that of one man has been offered to the goddess. Women come here to worship Lord Shiva and stand in the cold for an entire night in the middle of winter while
