Among the finest spots for a getaway is the Madras Crocodile Bank Trust and Centre for Herpetology at Vadanemmeli on East Coast Road. The place, which is a coastal dune forest, is just a few kilometres ahead of Mamallapuram. It is often referred to as the ‘Croc Bank.' The Bank, which is the biggest sanctuary for crocodiles in India, has come up with ‘Adopt a Reptile Scheme.' On Sundays, there will be a demonstration of feeding the crocodiles, which are housed in enclosures called ‘pens.' There is also a snake venom extraction centre run by the Irula Snake Catchers Industrial Cooperative Society.
