Near the town of Harsil lies the village of Mukhba (Mukhwa), situated along the Bhagirathi river on the route to Gangotri. The village is at an approximate altitude of 2620 meters. This is where the idol of Goddess Ganga is brought down from the Gangotri temple for the winter months when the Gangotri temple is inaccessible due to heavy snowfall. One can also see apples being sold in the bazaar of the town of Harsil right after they are harvested in late October from the nearby areas.
