In 1996 when he came out of the north block on way to the parliament to present his first budget, he had many promises to keep. The business community was looking for more economic reforms, the common man wanted a respite from inflation and the constituent party of the united front wanted a pro-poor budget. The finance minister P. Chidambaram tried to please each one of them even if he left few feathers ruffled. In an exclusive interview to India this week, a few months back Mr Chidambaram elaborated on his formula for pushing ahead with his reforms.
