In the first Indo-U.S encounter after the new BJP government was sworn in, U.S. permanent representative to the UN Mr Bill Richardson was in the Capital. The special envoy of President Clinton expressed his keenness for closer cooperation between New Delhi and Washington. During the meeting with the PM, the main emphasis was on the entire Indo-U.S relationship in order that it does not become hostage to their own differences on nuclear issues, human rights and Pakistan. Richardson applauded India for its restraint and responsible reaction to Pakistan's body missile and also congratulated New Delhi's decision to set up a National Security Council.
