In a ceremony that marks the anniversary of the service of the seniormost unit of Indian Army, a parade is conducted by the Bodyguards in honour of the President. The PBG was raised in the year 1773, in Benaras by then Governor General, Sir Warren Hastings, with strength of 50 handpicked troopers. They were known by different names as years passed, but for a major chunk of time they were known as the GGBG, that is the Governor General's Body Guards. Over the years, it continued to be a first-rate cavalry unit, chiefly for the personal and battlefield security of the Governor Generals. In the year 1923, the then Viceroy of India, Lord Reading, first conferred the distinction, when the bodyguard had completed 150 years of honorable service.
