Varanasi is a religious hub in India located on the bank of Ganga river. As the city is situated on the bank of the Holy river it also pollutes the river through different ways like cremation of human dead bodies, washing of clothes and taking bath by various sorts of people. Gange is considered to be the fifth most polluted river in the world and it poses significant threats to human health. Ganga is largest river and it provides water to 40% of India's population. Due to pollution all the aquatic animals that were living in Ganga river are wiping out. Sources of pollution in Ganga river are from untreated sewage, pollution from industries, rapid growth of population and industries, religious beliefs and rituals. Ganga Action Plan launched in April 1986 in order to reduce the pollution
