An Indian gharial (Gavialis gangeticus) slides down the sandy banks of the river towards the water. It is submerged completely in the water except for its spiny scales at the end part of the tail and the vessel-like snout. A gharial basks on the banks of a freshwater river inside Katarniaghat Wildlife Sanctuary in Uttar Pradesh. Gharials are endemic to the sandy freshwater rivers in Northern India.
