When I joined the Doon School, it was a sheer fluke really because we had just shot a tiger and a leopard at Sakrauda shooting block in Khanpur. We had a permit for the block and there was Colonel Williamson of the Gorkha Boys Company, there was John Martin, headmaster of the Doon School and Colonel M.K. Dang and I was a visitor with the shooting team in January. I remember when we shot a lot of Jungle Fowl, it was great fun, we did beats and Hakaas. Then, there was a party thrown by John Martin, the very fine literary headmaster of the Doon School. He was a bachelor and he invited all of us over for dinner and we were at his place when he mentioned, "I don't know what I'm going to do, my teacher of Chemistry is going away next week."
