Oriental Rat Snake (Ptyas mucosa), known locally as Dhaman, is India's largest non-venomous colubrid reaching 5-7 feet, common in Delhi's urban gardens, walls, and trees hunting rats, lizards, and frogs diurnally. This fast-moving diurnal species uses climbing ability and speed to capture prey, frequently sharing habitats with garden birds across Indian plains including Delhi suburbs. Jungle Babbler observes the 5ft-long snake moving through a Delhi garden. These snakes are often killed when spotted in urban areas but in reality, they are shy, non-venomous, and prefer to avoid humans altogether. When left undisturbed, they quietly move away without causing any harm. In fact, they play an important role in the ecosystem by helping control local rat populations.
