A hoverfly, also known as a syrphid or flower fly. These flies are often mistaken for bees or wasps due to their black and yellow/white striped bodies, but they are harmless and cannot sting. The hoverfly is pictured on a peony bud. Peonies attract various insects, including hoverflies, with a sweet, sugary nectar secreted by glands on their developing buds.
