These lovely Himalayan blooms go unappreciated, but at least secure, despite the presence of thousands of Hindu pilgrims trekking to the high altitude cave shrine of Amarnath in Jammu and Kashmir state, India. While not a Buttercup or Ranunculus family flower, this one is closely related but as opposed to Ranunculaceae species, it usually has eight or more petals, which have no nectaries at their base. The leaves are compound and much divided into narrow segments - an easy means for identification. The Adonis chrysocyathus is a handsome perennial with terminal golden-yellow flowers and is found in spring-time snow-melt Kashmir at altitudes of between 3500 and 4300 meters, often seen growing gregariously on recently snow-cleared damp slopes.
