Women from the Indian heartland states sit on the river bank and pray to the sun god, singing together. They apply tika or vermillion to their own foreheads. Men prepare fruit offerings in baskets. Bangle-wearing wrists break open coconuts next to the Corbusier-planned ponds around India Gate and the central esplanade of New Delhi. Men in yellow attire and women in reds and oranges pray at the India Gate waterways in Delhi, on the occasion of Chhat puja for the Chatt festival. They stand in knee-deep water and pray to the sun. This festival is held after the monsoon season, in warm and humid weather. The women offer banana leaves, marigold or gaindha garlands, coconuts and fruit items in prayer to the sun gods.
