Tracks of hundreds of trucks that have visited for illegal sand mining can be seen in the riverside sands, as the Chambal river flows through Madhya Pradesh and into Rajasthan, near Dholpur. The Chambal's waters are a clear blue-green, partly due to algae and partly due to clean winter waters even as the river flows at a low ebb. A huge National Highway bridge crosses the Chambal, providing fast year-round transport across the once badlands and dacoit infested ravines of the Chambal river hinterlands.
