The widespread removal of juniper shrubbery causes extensive damage to the alpine environment, especially since Juniper grows so slowly. Villagers and mountaineering expeditions often remove the juniper to use as an easy fuel for cooking and heating, thus wiping out the population of wild juniper. Brahmkamal flowers are similarly collected as an offering at mountain temples.
