Pandas have served as a professional genealogist for centuries. For a huge population, lengthy familial records such as these are the only source of tracing their lineage. Mohan Lal is full of stories about his father's close association with the former Prime Minister not only did he acted as spiritual guide and genealogist, in times of political crisis he would offer prayers at the banks of the Ganga. For the ordinary pilgrims, Panda is the only trustworthy guy. For them, Pandas set up makeshift stalls at the river bank. Each Panda is attached to a particular region. When the devotees arrive at Kumbh they seek out their Panda.
