A bel tree can be a lovely sight in summer with its yellowing round hard fruit on the branches, as seen against the green backdrop in the spring-summer time for this tree. As the fruit ripens, it falls to the ground and in the forest Chital or Spotted Deer and other animals come to eat the inside pulp. Human beings also eat the pulp which is said to be cooling and great for the stomach (ask Ramdev!) and also makes a great sherbet. These bel are ripe for the picking (or the dropping, as the case may be) at the Wilderness Orchard in Delhi. We use nylon netting below the trees, to make sure no one gets hurt from a suddenly dropped fruit!
