Watch the 1990 Padma awards ceremony in Rashtrapati Bhawan. Issues relating to credibility of the Indian press.. On 26th January 1990, the customary awards announced by the President to eminent Indian citizens. Three well-known journalists Arun Shourie, N. Ram and Nikhil Chakravarty were awarded Padma Bhushan while the first to accept the award Nikhil Chakravarty declined it. In his letter to the President, he wrote, "journalists have to be in constant interaction with political leaders they should try to avoid being identified in the public eye with any particular establishment and therefore in all humility, I decline this award."
