A compilation on the occasionally held Bhratra festival en route Tungnath shrine, in the upper villages of Uttarakhand, at the time of shrine opening of this Panch Kedar destination temple. High in the Garhwal Himalaya, near the Tungnath Temple, an unusual night unfolds, known locally as Bhratra. On the night of Bhratra, villagers gather in large numbers, masks are worn and ritual dances ensue, accompanied by the sound of bells and drums. It is not a festival in the conventional sense, but part of a spiritual journey, or yatra, that moves from village to village. Local belief holds that once every few decades, local deities leave their temples, travel to nearby villages, and bless their inhabitants.
