Theyyam from Kerala: Ritualistic art from North Malabar region, Kerala's intangible cultural heritage Theyyam is an ancient ritualistic performance art from the North Malabar region of Kerala, India, where performers embody gods and spirits through elaborate costumes, possessed dancing, and intense rituals. The term "Theyyam" means "God" or "incarnation of God," and the performances are deeply spiritual, involving instrumental music, dramatic storytelling, and community participation. Theyyam is a synthesis of ritual, dance, and theatre, with over 400 different forms performed annually as offerings to deities, often taking place from October to April.
