28 December 2009, Sravanabelagola, Karnataka, India. In one of the most important pilgrimage destinations in India, we see a puja performed on the sculpture of Gomateshwara Jaina (Bahubali), the great Jain teacher king. This is the tallest monolithic sculpture in the world, 57-feet tall and from a granite block, carved by the sculptor Aristenemi in the year 981 A.C., and located at Mount Vindhyagiri, Sravanabelagola, where it is presumed that the emperor Chadragupta Maurya (IV century BC) meditated. According to legend, Bahubali has practiced meditation standing on an anthill for so long to attain enlightenment, that nature grew around him.
