A herd of chinkaras or Indian gazelle (Gazella bennettii), white and reddish coated, stands either chewing food or vaguely looking towards the same direction. The herd consist of males, females and juveniles. The chinkaras are the smallest gazelles in Asia. The males have a distinctive horn to them while the presence of horns is minimized in females or non-existent. Chinkaras have reddish smooth fur coat in the summer months to blend in with the dry grassland. In the winters the coat of fur becomes paler with pronounced white underbelly and throat. They inhabit mostly dry arid grasslands and need very less water for survival.
