Enormous scale and spiritual atmosphere of the Gangasagar Mela, one of India’s largest religious pilgrimages held annually on Sagar Island in West Bengal. The scene shows aerial views of thousands of devotees gathered along the shoreline at the sacred confluence where the Ganga River meets the Bay of Bengal. Pilgrims enter the water to take a holy dip, a ritual believed in Hindu tradition to cleanse sins and help attain spiritual liberation or Moksha. Stretching across the coastline is a vast temporary “tent city” built to accommodate the millions of pilgrims, sadhus, visitors, and service workers who travel to the festival every year.
