Indian Naga sadhu smoking chillum. A chillum, or chilam, is a straight conical pipe with end-to-end channel, traditionally made of clay and used since at least the eighteenth century by as sadhus in India. It was invented in India. The culture of owning and smoking in a chillum has spread from India to the rest of the world since the mid-1960s. Naga Sadhus are categorized into Akharas, just like regiments in an army. They hold sticks, spears, swords and trident as a symbol of their identity. Some of the prominent Naga Akhara are Sanyasi Akhara, Bajrangi Akhara and Nirmal Akhara which are further subdivided into numbers of Akharas. Almost all the Akharas of Naga Sadhus take out a procession and go for a Holy Dip during the Ardh kumbh or Mahakumbh Mela. The processions led by Mahamandleshwar
