The Himalayan range is unstable, young and growing, so landslides are a frequent occurrence, especially during the monsoon season when water percolates the bedrock and lubricates it. This causes movement after the friction has been reduced between rock and rock. Travellers get out of their vehicles and watch the landslide clearing action in a pine forest zone in the lower middle Himalaya. Diesel fumes spew into the clean mountain air as two machines work their way through the debris, in order to clear it for road transport into the deeper mountains. The Hyundai makes short shrift of a rock that must easily weight a tonne, pushing it off the road and down the slope.
