Apatani old women in full tradition attire sitting at a gallery and waits for thier turn to perform a dance item during Dree festival, Ziro Valley, Arunachal Pradesh. Tattooing (Twpe) and the stuffing of large nose plugs (Y'apiñ hullo) were once popular among the women, although this practice has gradually fallen into decline in recent years. The practice of tattooing among Apatanis is as old as their existence. Apatani male decorate their face with a tattoo on the middle o of their chin in the shape of an English letter “T”. The Dree Festival is an Apatani agricultural rite. It involves the sacrifice of fowls, eggs and animals to the gods – Tamu, Metii and Danyi Pilo(Sun and Moon God).
