On an overcast wintery day in New Delhi, there is a pall of Suspended Particulate Matter (SPM) in the winter inversion layer lower atmosphere. Delhi's air quality has steadily worsened with rapid urbanization that brings pollution from automobiles and a range of other factors. Transportation is the main source of air pollution as it contributes more than half of the carbon monoxide, nitrogen oxides and almost a quarter of the hydrocarbons emitted into the air. Poor air quality not only increases respiratory ailments like asthma and bronchitis but also heightens the risk of life-threatening conditions like cancer.
