Farmers walk through their paddy fields after a day of work in Tamil Nadu, India. Paddy productivity in Tamil Nadu has always been the second highest in the country, next only to Punjab. During 1998-99 and 1999-2000, the state average productivity was higher than Punjab. Over the last decade, average productivity ranged from 3462 kg ha-1 to 5369 kg ha-. Paddy is cultivated at least twice a year in most parts of India, the two seasons being known as Rabi and Kharif respectively. The former cultivation is dependent on irrigation, while the latter depends on Monsoon. The paddy cultivation plays a major role in socio-cultural life of rural India. Kaveri delta region of Thanjavur is historically known as the rice bowl of Tamil Nadu. The total rice area in 2005-06 was 2.05 m ha. Season-wise area
