Local fish traders cut fish at a wholesale fish market in Chennai. ‘Fisheries’ play a vital role in ensuring the livelihood of a large number of people belonging to the economically weaker sections of the population of the State. It is identified as a powerful tool stimulating growth of a number of subsidiary industries and is a source of healthy and nutritious food. The World Health Organisation(WHO) has recommended per capita fish consumption of 13 kg per annum. The per capita fish consumption of Tamil Nadu is about 9.8 kg per annum. More than a million fishers in the State depend on fisheries and aquaculture for their livelihood.
