These daily wage labourers turn up in large numbers at the labour market at Gujjar Chowk in New Delhi. They are hoping to get hired for the day, for manual labour or construction work with daily wages in the Rs. 40 to 750 per day range (US$5 to 10 per day). They band up with labour group heads who carry placards or sticks, to show their allegiance to a particular labour contractor who then gets hired with his group of men.
