Just like the Dhaman or Rat Snake is a farmer's friend, these Cattle Egrets and Pond Herons live and breed around the agricultural fields and farms in this Karnataka village. They do not eat or destroy crops - instead, they feed on insects and even small rodents in the fields, and rid the farmer's lands of vermin. The Pond Heron seems to be concentrating on a patch of mud looking for its quarry to move and expose itself! As the oxen or bulls move through the fields, the egrets move in for their kill, closely following the farmer as he goes about his work.
