Fishing festival or riverine destruction? Maund mela on Aglar nadi behind Mussoorie leads to ecological damage. Locals band together in the river, to collect all the fish they have stunned. Men behave rowdy and rambunctious, excitable and in a festive mood at the Maund Mela fish killing festival in the western Himalaya. They have pre-prepared and collected Timru powder many months in advance of the festival, starting in April 2022, drying the powder collected from a flowering shrub. This powder is used to stun the fish in the entire river. Garhwali Uttarakhandi village men from Ghorakhuri and Nainbagh villages throw pre-collected and dried Timru powder into the Aglar river to stun the eels and fish, and to collect them for taking home and eating, at the centuries old but environmentally-mo
