Salt workers pumping the ground water in Gujarat. After pouring kerosene onto a stick with cloth tied around it, salt workers using an antique looking 'tullu' pump in order to pump ground water in the Rann of Kutch, Gujarat. after being crank-started with a pair of large fly wheels, it spews diesel or kerosene fumes into the air, and alternates between spluttering to life and then to death, and in between. The salt workers settle down in the desert for 8 months between October to May and make their homes adjacent to the salt pans that they work on. Every year there homes are destroyed by the monsoon and they have to rebuild them during their working season. All the workers stay near their salt pans and work in under the harsh sun to extract salt in the Little Rann of Kutch, Gujarat, India.
