Banana stem climbing competition during Yaoshang Festival, in Imphal

Kids in Imphal having fun climbing the banana pole which is erected near a free space in the streets during the Yaoshang/ Hoil festival in the state. Banana stems and the climbers are applied with oil to make the already slippery banana stem more difficult to climb. A certain amount of money is usually tied at the top of the stem before erecting it. The first person to reach the top and take the money is the winner. Lathmar Holi of Brijbhoomi - Mathura, Vrindavan and Barsana -- is very well known. The seven day long festivity of Holi in Brijbhoomi gets emulated in another Vaishnavite region in far off Manipur as Yaoshang. Though like inhabitants of Brij, Manipuris too are close to the folklore of Krishna, Radha and the Gopis, but the local sensibilities married to 'Holi' are quite unique a
