During Maha Shivratri festival, people break large numbers of coconuts to offer to the idols and states at the Khajuraho temples in Madhya Pradesh. The smell of incense fro joss sticks or agarbatii / dhoop batti, and the chanting of women and men make for a religious festive atmosphere, even if it messes up the environment of the ancient temples. A financial transaction takes place wherein a man gets mauli or red thread tied to his wrist, and a tikka or red vermillion mark on the forehead, and pays the pandit for it, and for his blessings.
