Although it may have looked like any other political meeting the Congress Party's Sankalp rally held at the Red Fort grounds of the capital was significant since it kicked off the party's election campaign. A large gathering sat in the scorching sun to listen to the party President and Prime Minister Mr. P. V. Narasimha Rao presents a synopsis of his government's achievements especially salvaging the country's economy which he said was in an abyss when he took over n 1991. Mr. Rao urged the people to call the bluff of those parties which sought votes on the basis of religion and caste but the week was dominated by last-minute parlays and lobbying by the parties which was constituted by the party president.
