George Mallory was a Housemaster at the school called Charterhouse in Godalming in Surrey. One of his favourite students was Irwing. Both of them were on the summit attempt on the north face of Mount Everest. It is speculated that Irwing, who was very strong, but not very experienced, dragged Mallory down when he slipped. It is possible that Mallory could have slipped, but Mallory was a very experienced climber and had been on Everest before. George Mallory was a very straight - forward person and was Post- Victorian and Post - Edwardian. He was not the kind of person who would be given to witticisms or one - liners.
